Renaming Assemblies

Did you know that you can actually change the names of the 3D assemblies that SOLIDWORKS Electrical makes?? Tired of trying to figure out what the assembly is with the naming convention that it comes up with?

Well your problems are solved! You can change the assembly names that the software comes up with, but yes, there is a catch. You must make this change in the SOLIDWORKS Electrical software. You can not make this change outside of the software, or the SQL will not know that the reference name has been changed.

Here’s how you do it…

Once you have created your schematic, and you are ready to move to the 3D environment in SOLIDWORKS Electrical, go through the Process tab and create the Location sub-assemblies by selecting the SOLIDWORKS Cabinet Layout icon. This then creates the sheets in the document browser which will take you directly into SOLIDWORKS 3D. While the software is doing this, it is also automatically creating a naming convention for the assemblies that you are about to start building.

Once these sheets are made in the document browser and BEFORE you actually proceed to the SOLIDWORKS 3D environment, highlight the specific sheet you would like to rename.

Right click and you will see about half way down the selection, a RENAME option. Select this.

This will then bring up a dialog box for you to change the name from the existing. It is worth mentioning that you will need to make sure you add the .SLDASM extension to the end of your new name.

Once you have said OK, you will see the changes in two areas. The first being the Properties of the sheet in your document browser:

And then also in the SOLIDWORKS environment once the sheet is opened. You will notice the name change in your Feature Tree of SOLIDWORKS.
